What is Olympic Day?

Across the world, Olympic Day is being celebrated—a day dedicated to promoting sport, healthy living, and Olympic values. Held every June 23rd, this initiative of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) aims to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity, mutual understanding, and friendship among all nations.

Olympic Day is more than a sports celebration; it is a global movement that promotes health, tolerance, and solidarity. We invite all citizens to participate in various activities, share their stories, and be part of this inspiring event. By engaging in sport and physical activity, we can collectively work toward a better and healthier society.

The idea of Olympic Day was first recorded in 1947 during the 41st session of the IOC in Stockholm. At that time, Dr. Gruss, an IOC member from Czechoslovakia, presented a report on the celebration of World Olympic Day, which was intended to promote the Olympic idea. Several months later, at the 42nd IOC session in St. Moritz, in 1948, this project was officially adopted.

National Olympic Committees (NOCs) then took on the task of organizing this event and chose a date between June 17 and 24, symbolically reflecting the founding of the IOC in Sorbonne, Paris, on June 23, 1894, when Pierre de Coubertin revived the Olympic Games.

The first Olympic Day was celebrated on June 23, 1948, with participation from countries such as Portugal, Greece, Austria, Canada, Switzerland, the UK, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Belgium, each organizing their own celebrations and sporting activities.

Since 1978, the Olympic Charter has recommended that all NOCs regularly organize Olympic Day to promote the Olympic movement.

The Olympic Day Run, considered the central activity of this event, was launched in 1987. Since then, more than 150 National Olympic Committees worldwide have organized it, with 45 participating in its inaugural edition. This activity promotes mass participation in sports and a healthy lifestyle.

As part of Olympic Day, the initiative "Let’s Move" was launched, highlighting the benefits of physical activity and an active lifestyle. This campaign encourages people around the world to share photos and stories about how they stay active through social media using hashtags #LetsMove, #OlympicDay, and tagging @Olympics. The goal is to inspire others to participate in similar activities and raise awareness about health, sport, and community. "Let’s Move" is the first of a series of events and initiatives initiated by the IOC to motivate and encourage the entire world to move and live healthily.

This day is an opportunity to promote Olympic values—excellence, friendship, and respect. At the same time, it encourages people of all ages to actively participate in sports, contributing to healthier lifestyles, disease prevention, and strengthening community bonds.
