42nd anniversary of the opening of the 1984 Sarajevo WOG

At the Olympic Stadium Koševo, 42 years ago, precisely at 14:30, the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo began. On behalf of the organizers, attendees were greeted by the President of the Organizing Committee Branko Mikulić and the President of the International Olympic Committee Juan Antonio Samaranch. The Games were officially opened by the President of the Presidency of the SFRY, Mika Špiljak.

The flame was lit by skater Sanda Dubravčić, the athletes' oath was taken by Bojan Križaj, and the judges' oath was taken by Sarajevo native Miodrag Perović. At that moment Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina were the focus of the world.

The first idea to host the Winter Olympics originated back in 1964 from Prof. Ljubiša Zečević from Sarajevo. His idea was supported by Ahmed Karabegović and Braco Kosovec, and with the support of Emerik Blum and a sketch by architect Braco Alikalfić, Prof. Zečević presented the idea to the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne.

The candidacy was formally submitted on December 30, 1977.

Numerous facilities were built for the Games: Zetra, the bobsleigh and luge track, ski jumps, sports halls, the "white slopes," cable cars, hotels, the Olympic Village and a press village with 2,640 apartments, roads to the mountain venues and 28 winter-sports centers in the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina — all confirming that the Olympics represented a development opportunity for BiH.

At the Sarajevo 1984 Winter Olympics, 1,272 athletes from 49 countries competed in 39 events. Among the medals, Jure Franko stood out with silver in the giant slalom, the first Yugoslav medal at the Winter Olympic Games. The SFRY team numbered 72 members, and from Bosnia and Herzegovina participated biathletes Tomislav Lopatić and Zoran Ćosić; speed skaters Behrudin Merdović and Bibija Kerla; bobsledders Boris Rađenović, Borislav Vujadinović, Mario Franić, Nikola Korica, Ognjen and Zoran Sokolović, Siniša Tubić and Zdravko Stojnić; and lugers Dajana and Suad Karajica and Dušan Dragojević, who achieved the best result for Bosnian-Herzegovinian winter Olympism on Trebević with 16th place.

The Games attracted 7,825 accredited journalists and over ten thousand volunteers. There were 206,000 overnight stays recorded in excursions and day-trip arrangements for about 40,000 guests.

The mascots Snowflake, by Miroslav Antonić, and the brave Vučko, by Jože Trobec, will remain lasting symbols of the Games. Jacques Rogge later said that the XIV Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo 1984 were "the Games of inspiration" with a human face and that Sarajevo holds a special place in the heart of the Olympic movement.

With all of the above, Bosnia and Herzegovina has reason to be proud of its Olympic role, which it continued with the successful organization of the EYOF Sarajevo and East Sarajevo 2019.
