Tomislav Cvitanušić on the roof of the world!
The flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina is on top of Mount Everest!
Bosnia and Herzegovina alpinist, ironman, triathlete, and President of the Supervisory Board of the Olympic Committee of BiH successfully climbed the highest peak on the planet, Mount Everest.
Cvitanušić and his team stepped to a height of 8,848 meters in the early morning hours of May 17, when the flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina flew on the roof of the world!
Muhamed Gafić, BIH The doyen of alpinism just posted a message from Cvitanušić:
"The flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina is on top of Mount Everest!
Tomo sent a message:
Tomo climbed all night. It was the morning to make sure he was on top of Everest.
How difficult it was for him - only he knows.
He entered the "death zone" and survived and the mountain rewarded him. Daylight needed to return to him, because the top is half way, and the descent can be more dangerous. Now he is in a tent, safe, at 8000 m.
Tomorrow they will descend down the Lhotse rock to the second high-altitude camp - C2 at 6500 m, and the day after tomorrow, at night, because the frost keeps the seraks from attacking the alpinists, in Baza.
And there is internet!”
Cvitanušić and his team managed to reach the summit after 46 days of low temperatures, wind, and snowfall.
With wishes for a safe return, on behalf of the Olympic family of Bosnia and Herzegovina, we send sincere congratulations to Tomislav and the entire team!
Below, read Muhamed Gafić's post before the final climb. Muhamed Gafić was in contact with Tomislav via the Garmin inReach satellite locator, after leaving the zone of available internet:
„Tomo went to the top! Here is his message:
The current temperature at the top is about -30°C, with a wind speed of about 15 km per hour, and at the top early in the morning, when Tom is expected to arrive, the wind speed will be the same, and the coldest, up to -36°C. It is comforting that the sun, which rises around 5 o'clock, will already warm it.
In front of Tom is the southern saddle, about 400 meters wide, from which a 2-kilometer-long ascent begins, almost a thousand meters high, to the top. It will be hard and cold for him because he is on the saddle for the first time and the wind is the strongest.
That is entering the "death zone", an area above 8000m that is deadly dangerous.
This is followed by the south face of Everest's Peak, the sharp ridge behind the South Peak, and the Hillary Step. The last five hundred meters of height and almost a kilometer towards the top are secured with fixed ropes, so it will be easier for him.
Tomo is protected by the best clothes and shoes in the world, with additional oxygen that lowers his actual height and "warms" him, the psyche of an ironman, and the alpinist knowledge of the Sarajevo Alpinism School.
Tomo knows that he will have to save his strength for the return, from the top or before it.
And he knows that when he's running out of strength, he's only halfway there that he can actually cross.
I believe in him!”
